Morris Mountain Lodge
6 300 ft² building, 95 acre site
Located on a pristine wooded property in Morristown, Vermont, this single-family residence has been designed for a young couple who relocated to Stowe from Boston. RC has worked closely with the clients over the last several years as the design has evolved and adapted to their needs. Today, the design consists of a series of thoughtful landscape features and several planned structures.
From macro to micro, this project represents a consolidated landscape and architecture approach. On one hand, the architecture responds to the landscape – it takes advantage of steep topography to bring sunlight into the lower level, and the pavilions are oriented to frame specific views. By organizing the project along the four cardinal directions and dividing the architecture into five distinct volumes, the project captures a variety of near and long views while tracking the sun and moon through seasonal and diurnal changes.
On the other hand, landscape responds to architecture: sheltered courtyards are carved out of the primary residence to create moments of prospect and refuge, while micro-sites have been developed based on the sequence of buildings: from a planted orchard upon entry to the property, to a forested landscape along the winding entry drive and across a new 60’ heavy timber bridge, to finally a meadow landscape at the house site.
The building program includes gracious common living areas, private guest suites, a private primary suite, media room, bar, and home office. Exterior amenities include a pool, sauna, hot and cold plunges and a grand screened porch. A thoughtfully designed path system connects the multitude of exterior amenities, allowing users to seamlessly navigate the site.
Blasting for the foundations has been completed. Construction is expected to resume in the summer of 2025. Elsewhere on the property, RC designed the 6,000 SF contemporary event barn and 60’ heavy timber bridge.
